Jim Carrey provided a profound commencement address at a private university, Maharishi University of Management in Fairfield, IA. MUM studies focus on consciousness-based education by adding self-development programs and an innovative approach to transcendental meditation.
During the ceremony, the MUM Board of Trustees presented Jim Carrey with an honorary degree of Doctor of Fine Arts Honoris Causa to honor his lifetime achievements as a comedian, artist, author, philanthropist and, of course, actor. However, it was Jim Carrey’s commencement address that brought those in attendance to laughter and complete inspiration.
Carrey Shares Life’s Lessons
Carrey shared life lessons that he has learned after working over 30 years in the entertainment industry. I found his words to be insightful and his examples unique. One of my favorite moments is when he shared a painting he completed not long ago that depicts the various personalities that we are all capable of having; personalities that darken our sole and weaken our hearts due to fear. He named the painting High Visibility with the intent to share that the figures in the painting dared to be seen by picking up the light; the light of their true selves, fears and darkened spirit.
He wanted the crowd to understand that we control our light; our inner self. We have full control of our destiny, our wants, our thoughts and our love. He followed with these powerful words, “Let the armor go. Your need for acceptance can make you invisible in this world. Risk being seen in all of your glory.”
His lesson is that we all have the power to let our light shine in a positive and loving manner. While many are guided by fear, it is best to guide yourself by love rather than the beast that can lurk within; the ego. “Do not lead your life in fear; rather lead your life in love. Make sure your light is compelling.”
He went on to mention that there is nothing bigger than yourself, “the imagination is always manufacturing scenarios, good and bad, and the ego tries to keep you trapped in the multiplex of the mind.” Ultimately, he wanted the graduating class to understand that it is very easy to let your ego guide your judgment and actions. In the end, it will hold you back and share the negative personalities that darken the sole and weaken the heart. Instead, relax and dream of a good life; a miraculous and wonderful life. From there, work toward living that life every day and enjoy the journey. Love the journey rather than dread it or fear the work it takes to get you to that wonderful life.
Overcome Challenges and Move Forward in Faith
Carrey shared his advice on overcoming challenges and having faith. “Perceive challenges as beneficial so that you can deal with them in the most productive way.” He went on to say, “take a chance on faith; not religion, not hope, but faith.” He referred to hope as a beggar. I loved this message because I too believe that hope is a word that represents lack. One can “hope” for something to happen, but there is little faith that this thing will actually happen. Faith is powerful. Faith will move mountains through the belief that we will find a way.
Watch Carrey’s Commencement Speech
He concluded his speech by reminding us to do beautiful things in this world by choosing love over fear. He encouraged all to decide what we want and the person we want to be, and to accept a grand life and enjoy new and amazing experiences, but above all, serve the world. Don’t let the world serve you.
I encourage you to watch his full speech. Only then will you discover the full impact of his words. Please leave a comment below with your thoughts on Carrey’s speech.
