They say that those who sing in the car are happier, healthier and live longer. One of my favorite things about driving with my daughter, Jane, is that when a song comes on the radio, her whole body starts to move. Her little legs bounce to the beat and her head swings from side to side. I cheer her on from the driver’s seat and she giggles and moves about a little more. It makes my heart so happy to see her (only 21 months old) find joy and fun in such a simple thing.
Needless to say, I always have an upbeat CD in the car in case the radio doesn’t satisfy our jamming sessions. Every day on our commute, I join in with her and sing along with the music the best I can. Thank God she doesn’t care if I sing off tune. It’s all about having fun, right! Her baby brother, Peter, is usually either sound asleep or fiddling with the blanket draped over his waist; oblivious to the fun around him. He will soon join us, I’m sure of it.
My husband, Adam, understands the importance of having fun in the moments we have. He sings along to the music in the car and really gets into it when a good country song comes on. I love it! I love seeing Jane’s smile grow when she sees daddy join in on the fun.
One of the many dreams I have for my kids is that they never lose that desire to find joy and fun in the simple things. I’ll continue to tell my kids not to care who is watching from nearby cars. Sing to that song on the radio; loudly! Roll down the window and let your hair get a little frizzy from the wind. Continue moving your head from side to side as if you’re Will Farrell in A Night at the Roxbury (great movie). Your joy will make others around you have fun and smile, which is a powerful thing even if it’s for only a moment.
Sing loud! Dance vigorously!
